Superbill
A superbill is an itemized receipt provided by your therapist that includes all the information your insurance company needs to potentially reimburse you for out-of-network services. It is not a bill for payment—it’s a tool to help you get reimbursed by your insurer.
-
Call your insurance company to ask:
Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health services?
What is my deductible?
What percentage of the fee will be reimbursed?
Is a superbill required for reimbursement?
-
Begin therapy with a licensed therapist (such as Lan Griffith or Megan Steele).
Pay for sessions out-of-pocket at the agreed-upon rate.
-
After your session(s), your therapist will issue a superbill upon request.
This document includes:
Therapist name, credentials, license number
Practice information and NPI (National Provider Identifier)
CPT codes for services provided
ICD-10/DSM5 diagnosis code
Session dates, duration, and fees paid
Client’s full name and date of birth
-
Send the superbill to your insurance company through their claims portal, mail, or fax.
Include any forms your insurer requires (e.g., claim form, proof of payment).
-
If approved, your insurance company will send reimbursement directly to you.
Reimbursement times vary—usually within 30–60 days.
No Surprises Act & Good Faith Estimates
-
As of January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act protects clients from unexpected bills and ensures transparency in healthcare costs.
What You’ll Receive:
A Good Faith Estimate (GFE) showing the anticipated cost of your care
This GFE can be shared alongside your superbill for documentation
Note: Therapists are required to provide a GFE before your first appointment or upon request—especially if you are uninsured or not using insurance.
-
Save all receipts and correspondence
Ask your therapist if your superbill can be auto-generated monthly
Know that reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your insurance
